Discovering the Majestic Grand Portage State Park in Minnesota

Grand Portage State Park is a 291 acre state park at the northeastern tip of Minnesota, USA, on the Canada–United States border.

The hike to the waterfall is only a half of a mile and is on a part paved trail and boardwalk. Stairs at the waterfall will take you to three different viewing areas.

Visitors may see osprey, great-blue heron, eagles, otter, beavers, white-tail deer, black bear , or even moose while hiking in the park.

There are many different spices of plants and trees growing in the park. We found the red berries, know as Thimbleberries, to be very interesting. They can be eaten, but are very tart.

Sitting on the United States - Canada border,  roaring water plunges 120 feet over High Falls into the Pigeon River in the Grand Portage State Park.

Directions

From the town of Grand Marais, Minnesota, travel north on State Highway 61 for about 36 miles to the Canadian Border. The park entrance is on the west side of the highway, just before you come to the U.S. Customs Station on the US/Canada border.

Camping/Lodging

The park is for day use only. There are no campsites at this park. However, camping is available six miles south of the park at Grand Portage Marina and RV Park.

Parking

Permits  are required for most state parks in Minnesota.  We paid $7 for a day pass (good for all state parks) and it is well worth the money.  You can pick up a pass at any state park.

Discovering Pedernales Falls State Park in Johnson City, Texas

The saying " Everything is bigger in Texas"comes to mind when looking at the falls!

Located within the Pedernales Falls State Park, Pedernales Falls is part of the Pedernales River in Blanco County.

The Falls drop about 50 feet in elevation over huge slabs of limestone and Rocks for about 3,000 feet.

The trail to the overlook is an easy walk from the parking area, but the trail from the overlook to the bottom of the falls is pretty steep in places.

Once at the bottom, you can walk out onto the boulders across the falls.

Capturing the Beauty of Lake Catherine State Park's Waterfall: A Christmas Day Photoshoot

We spent last Christmas on Lake Catherine and had a blast. It was a beautiful warm day, so we hiked to the popular waterfall and took our photos there. I thought I would share them with you for inspiration on finding a unique place for a Christmas photoshoot.

A waterfall is so such an unexpected place and everyone has loved all the photos!

I love catching those little moments that will mean so much to the cousins in the future.

Some of my favorites are the unplanned ones like this. I think we made a lot of hikers happy with all the hats. Everyone we passed was smiling!

Our youngest family was worn out from all the hiking. I'm pretty sure several of the adults were tired from carrying him too! I noticed he was passed around a lot during the trip.

Rock City Gardens (Lookout Mountain, Georgia)

What started out as Frieda Carter desire to create a garden with winding trails through giant rock formations in the early 1930’s, has become a popular tourist attraction in Georgia.

Rock City is a unique place on Lookout Mountain that attracts more than half a million people each year.

A 4,100-foot walking trail leads through rock formations, caves, and gardens, ending at the edge of a cliff know as Lovers Leap.

The name “Lovers Leap” comes from a Cherokee legend about feuding tribes and two lovers going over the cliff. One was thrown and the other jumped, both ending in death. What a tragic story for such a beautiful site!

The claim of “see seven states” from Lover’s Leap comes from diary entries of a Union office and a Confederate nurse during the Civil War, both talking about being able to see seven states from the summit. Flags of all seven states stand in representation of the documentations. The states are Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
